“A Boy Finds The Water Is His Friend (6.1.2.8) At Walton Pt., Tommy Drum, 5, reached the lake Weds, ran from the trailer to the water and dock edge, stumbled, slipped in. His sister, Kathy, 9, yelled, then reached out, got his finger, pulled him in. Undaunted, Tommy stood at the spot where he fell in, on Sun., and there caught his first fish, using a worm and an old-fashioned , long, bamboo pole, a rock bass bigger than his hand.
July 13, 1963, The Canandaigua Lake News”
Those are the actual words from the critically acclaimed tabloid, The Canandaigua Lake News. Well, no one could ever accuse them of sensationalizing a story. Or maybe they were just short on space. In actuality, I fell off a breaker wall when the bamboo pole broke in half and I tried to grab the tip of it. I was underwater at least 30 seconds, standing on the bottom, with the water just over my head. I could feel the waves hitting the wall and starting to drag me out into the lake. I also remember trying to swim like Popeye (ah…… no, it didn’t work). I was about to lose consciousness when something pulled me from the water. My sister Kathy, 9, (well The “CLN” got that right at least) had heard a splash when I fell in. She though it was a fish jumping in the water. When she walked over to the wall, she looked down and saw me standing on the lake floor. She screamed at my brother Billy who was nearby, then reached down and pulled me out. DAMN HER!
